Vijay Amritraj, who is Chairman of theIndiaBridge.com and considered India’s Ambassador of Sports, recently concluded his first visit to the quake-hit Gujarat region of India since being appointed a ‘Messenger of Peace’ by the UN Secretary General. In the webcast on April 24th, Mr. Amritraj will address diplomats and the media, presenting a report on the most current status of relief and rehabilitation efforts in Gujarat. He will also use the occasion to speak about the growth and future of India.

“I am particularly pleased to have an opportunity to express appreciation to contributors from the world community, including those within India and many non-resident Indians, for their quick and remarkable response to help rebuild the lives of the Gujarat earthquake victims. At the same time, I think it is important at this juncture to discuss the future of India, which is committed to becoming a growing force in international trade. The April 24th forum at the UN presents a unique opportunity to focus on those messages,” Mr. Amritraj stated.

During his visit, Mr. Amritraj toured quake-affected areas in Bhuj, the epicenter of the January 26th earthquake. He met with relief agencies and quake victims and visited schools. Mr. Amritraj specially carried and delivered 500 soccer balls to schoolchildren in Bhuj. Saying, “It put smiles on the wonderful, innocent faces of those children,” Mr. Amritraj thanked global sports giant Nike for the generous gift of soccer balls.
